This is a piece I did for my installation class. It was inspired by my Great Grandmother, Jessie Folds, who died in 1998. It features her broach, as well as her two small cross pins. The gourd represents her affinity for gardening, growing her own vegetables, and her general love of the earth and nature. I built the shelf with recessed trenches for the Bell Jars to nest in. The butterflies weren't originally black, so I took the box apart, painted them, and repaired it. The images on each side, the tree and the x-ray, are an allusion to the mystical and scientific aspects of death. The face is a casting from a mold of my own face, while the gold ring adds cohesion to the formal elements of composition and color.
